nature and enhance profitability. Afterwards, Timothy will provide us with a
fascinating overview of NYC’s emerging ‘zero waste’ movement. Part of ‘WASTE NOT, WANT NOT’ – A BOOK & FILM SERIES

Curbside recycling has returned to New York City, but
NYC residents produce some 13,000 tons of garbage a
day, which is then exported and travels to and through
poor communities in other states. How can we reduce
our waste and create a more sustainable NYC?
Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage illustrates
the links between modern industrial production,
consumer culture and our disposable lifestyle. With
only 5% of the world’s population, the U.S. consumes
more than a quarter of the planet’s resources. Serious
yet wryly humorous, the Film’s images portray the
unintentional beauty of production, waste, and the
stories our culture tells us about both.
Film (19 min) to be followed by a discussion with:
+ Heather Rogers, the film’s writer/director and
Brooklyn resident
+ Robin Nagle, NYU anthropologist and author of the
forthcoming tentatively titled book, We all Wear

- Film and discussion of Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage
10/21/2003 - Long Island City, Queens
Join Recycle This! and ARROW on Tuesday, October 21 at 6:30pm as we view the film "Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage" with the writer and director Heather Rogers. Discussion will focus on the problem of trash in our society; possible solutions, and how to create the kind of city we want to live in. A tour of the Reuse Center will follow. "Gone Tomorrow" is a serious yet wryly humorous film which explores the history and politics of garbage, a substance both hidden and omnipresent. With only five percent of the world's population, the US consumes more than a quarter of the planet's resources. Using interviews, scenes from massive dumps, post WWII advertising and an array of obscure and beautiful archival footage, "Gone Tomorrow" uncovers the links between modern industrial production, consumer culture and our disposable lifestyle. At the ARROW Reuse Center For Building Materials, 51-02 21st Street, Long Island City, Queens. Speakers include Heather Rogers, writer & director of the film, and Timothy Logan of the Waste Prevention Coalition. Discussion and Mexican after party to follow. $5 suggested donation (no one turned away for lack of funds). Light refreshments served. Directions and map available at http://www.arrowonline.org/arcontacts.html.
- 5 Borough Film Tour
8/31/2003 - Gone Tomorrow: The Hidden Life of Garbage
You loved it so much, we're taking it on tour! There will be at least one show in every borough this summer and fall.
About the Film: Gone Tomorrow explores the history and politics of garbage, a substance hidden yet omnipresent. With only five percent of the world's population, the US consumes more than a quarter of the planet's resources. To investigate the roots of America's waste-addicted culture, this 19-minute documentary excavates the history of garbage handling from the 1800s through the post-WWII golden era of consumption, up to modern day recycling and all its contradictions. Using interviews, scenes from massive dumps, and an array of obscure and beautiful archival footage this film uncovers the links between modern industrial production, consumer culture and our disposable lifestyle. Gone Tomorrow is serious yet wryly humorous; and while its subject is ugly, its images foreground the unintentional beauty of production, waste, and the stories our culture tells about both.
About the Tour: This film illustrates the bigger issue with our waste problem--we are consuming too much and throwing too much away. Recycling can only solve so many of our problems, while personal responsibility and an environmentally aware conscience are key to cleaner air, water and urban communities. We are working to bring community groups and residents together and let the film do what it does best: create a dialogue and opportunity for us to share ideas and explore a collective solution to the recycling cuts and the city's failure to address waste reduction in a meaningful way. Heather Rogers, writer, producer and director of the film, will be on hand for many shows to discuss her work and more.
Contact us if you are a venue/ community group/activist/artist/individual and want to get involved!
